Uefa Cup 2009: Shakhtar Donetsk wins cup final

Ukrayne’s Shakhtar Donetsk won the UEFA Cup, its first European trophy, defeating Germany’s Werder Bremen (2-1) after extended time. The match was well balanced, tied (1-1) after regular time, and was resolved by a goal scored by Jadson in extended time.

Uefa Cup 2009: Udinese, sole survivor, advances

After all main Italian clubs were eliminated in the Champions League and Uefa cup, the small Friuli club of Udinese is the only Italian club that is left to contest a European trophy this year. Udinese advanced to the Uefa cup quarterfinals by eliminating the defending champion Zenit St. Petersburg. Udinese qualified on aggregate score after winning the first leg (2-0) with Di Natale and Quagliarella (photo) scoring and narrowly losing (1-0) the second match. This is a great result for the club coached by Marino which however is disappointing in Serie A where it remains in the lower end of the standings.

Uefa cup 2008: Zenit wins cup final

In the UEFA cup final, Zenit Saint Petersburg beat Rangers Glasgow (2-0) and clinched its first European trophy. The Russian team clinched the victory after a balanced match by scoring the two winning goals in the second half. Rangers had eliminated Fiorentina in the semifinals by winning on penalty kicks (2-4).
